The word photography comes from the Greek words fos which means light and grafo which
means to write. During its infancy, the photographs taken and developed were in black and
white or monochrome. Colored photography on the other hand was explored in the 19th century
although initial results yielded in temporary images.

Digital camera was invented directly related to the technology that records television images.
Both video cameras and digital cameras use either Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor
(CMOS) or Charged Couple Device (CCD) in sensing light, color, and intensity.

Digital cameras today gather many photography enthusiasts, both amateur and professional,
because they no longer need to spend weekly or perhaps even daily on films as well as having or
getting their shots printed. This is because digital cameras use memory cards. These memory
cards come in several forms such as the SD (secure digital) card, Compact Flash (CF) card,
Sony’s Memory Stick, Multimedia Card (MMC), and Smart Media (SM) card. In digital
cameras, after a shot is made, the shot is then saved into the memory card where users then
upload it in their computers to view them.

Digital photography is a kind of photography wherein digital technology is used in making
images. In the beginning, before such technology has been invented, photographers used
photographic films to make images. These types of photographs were made visible using
photographic processing. In contrast to this, digital images can be stored, printed, displayed,
manipulated, archived, and transmitted using computers and digital techniques without the use of
any chemical processing.

Digital cameras today are unlike the cameras of a decade ago. Digital cameras now are able
to take pictures as well as record videos and sound. Some digital cameras are even equipped
with ‘PictBridge’ where users can connect their digital camera to a ‘PictBridge’ ready printer and
print images without the use of a computer. Digital cameras often capture in .raw, .tiff, and .jpg
or .jpeg format which are easily readable to computers as an image format.

Pixel count is the main attraction of most camera makers. This is usually a major factor that
discerns and evaluates a digital camera for many. Not all high megapixel cameras are good.
In fact, a low megapixel camera with good image sensor, exposure metering, and sensitivity
sometimes yields better images than high megapixel but low quality cameras.

Film-based photography is now almost obsolete thanks to the advent of digital cameras. Digital
imaging has now been revolutionary thanks to many powerful image-editing software. It has
aroused the curiosity of people due to the innovative effects that can be employed to digital
images that many are now taking photography lessons as well as image editing courses.
